Kapyali, is a primordial Konkani word meaning ‘quilts’. The antecedent of this word has been intertwined with the history of my family, especially my great grandmother. The process of making quilts is an age-old skill, rich with the cultural tradition of her village Kumarjua. It was an illustrious art form she followed with passion. I can still feel the soft fabric of the quilts which she stitched by hand on my skin. I remember being wrapped with comfort in her warm labour of love even today, decades later, I still preserve her quilts. This collection is an ageless ode to her, borne of nostalgia and fond remembrance of the sustainable practices followed by our ancestors. Much like the process of quilt - making through this collection, we have up-scaled scrap pieces of fabric to form one of a kind garments. This collection pays homage to my great grandmother’s timeless craft vitalized with the nostalgia of my childhood.
